I Will Always Love You - Why I started to sing it

As a child I enjoy to imitate singers on the radio. It almost doesn't matter what genre it is. I'm trying to understand how to use my voice in order to sound like them. For some reason I like male singers that use their falsetto to reach their top notes. I'm humming along to tunes by Art Garfunkel, the Beach Boys, the Bee Gees, Chris Martin (Coldplay) and Chris Isaak to name a few of my favorites through the years.

As a teenager I'm the lead singer in a couple of local hard rock bands in Stockholm and during this period I learn how to use distortion and belting techniques. This is quite the opposite end of the spectrum if you compare it to use the falsetto if you ask me but it's interesting and great fun to experiment and mix different vocal registers. Later I start to sing in choir and take singing lessons from vocal coaches in different genres. I strive to develop something unique and personal. That is my vision at least.

When I first start to sing cover songs on small stages in front of busy crowds I learn that you need something very different and to get noticed. By combining falsetto and rock vocal techniques in the same song I'm inventing my own versions of popular ballads that have are usually performed by women because of the high notes. I Will Always Love You becomes one of those songs that I really enjoy to sing regularly.

In the next blog post I describe how I challenge myself by performing the song acapella in front of an international audience.
