In time I Will Always Love You becomes my favorite cover song. After a time I try to find a way to challenge myself and take it to the next level. Finally I decide to perform the song acapella on a stage in front of about 500 people from about 40 countries.
The night of the live performance arrives. I wait backstage and hear distant sounds from the audience from the other side of the curtain. My heart beats very fast. When the curtain opens and I enter the stage I ask the nearest musician to play a note the piano to guide me. To my surprise he says that it is not possible and that I have to start to sing without a reference pitch. I realise that if I start on a pitch that is too high I will not be able to pull it off as there is a key change in the end of the song. What should I do? There is no way back so I start to sing despite that there is no backing track.
Apart from me singing the song you would be able to hear a pin drop. Before the last chorus I make a foot stomp to emphasize the key change. To my amazement I'm able to reach the highest notes with ease. Somehow my body remembers how to do it.
When I stop singing the entire audience is silent for a few seconds. After that I get a big round of applause and a pat on the back. There is a loud cheer from the audience. What a relief! What a night!
